What Happens Next

As Canada transitions to Chip and PIN technology, you will see an increase in the number of places where you can pay using chip terminals. Chip cards are used in much the same way as your existing magnetic stripe cards. Instead of swiping the card, it is inserted into a retailer’s chip terminal and you will be asked to enter your PIN to authorize the transaction.

To ensure a smooth transition, chip cards will continue to be issued with a magnetic stripe so you can make purchases at retailers without a chip terminal.

We’ll take care of everything

The transition to Chip and PIN technology will take place over the next couple of years. There is no need for you to contact us, we will automatically replace your HSBC debit card and HSBC MasterCard®. All customers will receive chip cards by the end of 2011. Until you receive your new card, continue using your existing card as usual.

Important information about your PIN
