Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does the Trip Cancellation insurance plan cover?

HSBC's Trip Cancellation insurance plan will reimburse your non-refundable prepaid travel arrangements, if you must cancel your trip before departure as a result of a:
    - Death, injury, or sickness prior to your departure date
    - Travel advisory to postpone your trip
    - Loss of work or relocation
    - Natural disaster
    - Legal obligation such as jury duty
    - Quarantine
    - Missed connection
Please refer to the Summary of Coverage for complete details on benefits, conditions, limitations and exclusions.

  • Do I have to purchase my Trip Cancellation plan when I book my trip?

No, but we highly recommend that you purchase your insurance that day because things can change leading up to your departure date. The longer you wait, the higher the likelihood that you may have to cancel your trip for a reason that would otherwise be covered by our policy. If you buy your insurance after such an occurrence, then the cancellation is not covered. Purchase your insurance online and get a 5% discount!

  • Do I have to purchase my Trip Cancellation plan for the full amount of my non-refundable trip cost?

Yes. In some instances, if you have to cancel a trip, with enough notice, certain travel expenses will be refunded. The non-refundable amount of your trip cost is that amount which will not be refunded to you if you have to cancel. As your trip gets closer, the amount that is non-refundable can increase. We recommend that you buy your insurance at the same time that you book your trip and that you buy insurance for the full amount of your trip cost to make sure that you are covered. If you choose not to follow this advice, then please be sure to increase the amount you insure with us as your non-refundable portion increases. Purchase your insurance online and get a 5% discount!

  • Do you offer family rate coverage for the Trip Cancellation plan?

    No.

  • What should I do if I have to cancel my trip?

You must notify us immediately and no later than the business day following the day you become aware of a reason to cancel your trip. You must also cancel your trip booking immediately. We will start the claim process for you and send you all necessary paperwork for you to file your claim.

Kate and Tim

Trip cancellation insurance – Kate and Tim

Kate and Tim were taking their family on a dream vacation. With return flights, hotel accommodations, concert tickets, and theme park passes, it was expensive. Unfortunately, two days before their trip, Tim was in a car accident and was hospitalized. Kate cancelled the trip. The tour company deemed it non-refundable since it was so close to the departure date. But because Kate had purchased Trip Cancellation insurance, their total trip costs were refunded. With Trip Cancellation Insurance, the family's dream holiday was only delayed.
