There are precautions you can take that greatly minimize fraud and unwanted attempts at authorizing your account:
- Use ‘safe’ passwords including numbers and special characters, and never reveal them to anyone. Never respond to an email request asking for your password information. Pick password verification questions that only you can answer.
- Review your statements regularly and notify us immediately if you see unauthorized charges.
- Make sure your computer and internet connection are secure. Keep your anti-spyware and anti-virus software up to date, and use a firewall.
- Never leave your computer unattended during an online investing session, and always sign out and close the web browser after each online investing session
How is HSBC InvestDirect protecting me?
HSBC InvestDirect employs the latest, most advanced security technology to protect your privacy and security. We use, 128-bit encryption, secure firewalls and digital certificates for customer protection, and we constantly develop security enhancements to curb the latest threats in data vulnerability. Working together, we can minimize the risk of fraud, but in the unlikely event that you become a victim of a fraudulent event, you have our guarantee that you will be reimbursed at 100%.
For further information, refer to our Security page and to the Website Use Agreement found in our Terms and Conditions. This security guarantee is governed by and subject to the terms of these agreements. However, in the event of any inconsistency between these agreements and this security guarantee, this security guarantee shall govern.3
1 "Unauthorized" access means a transaction that was carried out in your InvestDirect account through the InvestDirect website without your permission, authorization or knowledge and where it can be established that you are a victim of fraud, theft or coercion.

However, in the event of any inconsistency between these agreements and this security guarantee, this security guarantee shall govern. HSBC InvestDirect will not be required to reimburse you under this security guarantee unless you a) cooperate fully and provide all information and take all actions that HSBC InvestDirect reasonably request when investigating an alleged unauthorized access, and b) notify us immediately in the event of loss, theft, misuse or compromise of your password. Moreover, HSBC InvestDirect will not be required to reimburse you pursuant to this security guarantee if it has reason to believe that a) you have failed to take reasonable precautions to prevent an unauthorized access (this would include failing to sign-out at the end of an online session and logging off the HSBC InvestDirect website); b) you shared your password with any other person, or were otherwise negligent or careless in keeping your password confidential; or c) you accessed the HSBC InvestDirect website using a computer that you had reason to believe contained software that had the ability to reveal, or otherwise compromise, your password to a third party.
Limitation of Liability
HSBC InvestDirect will not under any circumstances provide you with compensation under this security guarantee or otherwise be liable to you for any indirect loss or damage, including loss of income or profits, economic loss, incidental, indirect or consequential loss, resulting directly or indirectly from an unauthorized access in your account, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damage.
