British Columbia Training and Education Savings Grant (BCTESG)

To help families start planning and saving early for post-secondary education, the Government of British Columbia will contribute $1,200 for eligible children through the B.C. Training and Education Savings Grant (BCTESG).

The first step to apply for the B.C. Training and Education Savings Grant is to schedule an appointment.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for the $1,200 Grant the following criteria must be met:
  • The child must be born in 2006 or later and must be between 6 and 9 years old to apply (while the program is being implemented, children born before August 15, 2009 have an extension to apply for the grant; speak to us for details);
  • A Parent or Legal Guardian and the child must be residents of British Columbia; and
  • The child is the beneficiary of a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) with a participating financial institution such as HSBC Investment Funds (Canada) Inc. No investment required.

Apply for the grant

The application form will be completed at the time you open the RESP account.

  • Valid British Columbia driver’s license;
  • British Columbia Identification Card;
  • British Columbia Services Card (new BC CareCard and driver’s license which will be fully implemented in 2018);
  • British Columbia utility bill (dated within the last 3 months and listing the current address of the custodial parent or legal guardian) for electricity, gas, phone, cable, water or garbage.

If the subscriber of the account is not a B.C. resident and is not a parent or legal guardian, such as grandparents or other relatives, they may still apply for the grant as long as they meet the requirement that one of the parent/legal guardian and the beneficiary are B.C. residents and one parent/guardian must provide one of the acceptable proofs of residency.

Allow approximately 6 to 8 weeks after we have processed the application form for the receipt of the grant.
